He had a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
But then those two brutal thugs came by and murdered him.
The two people who murdered Matthew Sheppard should be punished for murder. They should be forced to spend the rest of their lives in jail, with no possibility of parole.
The fact that Matthew Sheppard was gay, and the fact that his murderers were homophobic, should not play any factor in the sentences that the murderers receive.
The people sho support hate crime legislation tend to be (although not always) the same people who otherwise go soft on criminals. The people who support parole to let violent criminals out of jail, tend to be (although not always) the same people who are in favor of hate crime legislation.
Here are some senences that I support for first time offenders. For all of these sentences, criminals should be reuired to serve the full sentence. In other words, there should be no possibility of parole.
Stealing a car: 10 years
Burglary: 20 years
Rape: 30 years
Murder: Life in jail
