07/20/02: Mistakes in the film

I enjoyed the movie and I know that those who made it didn't care about realism (hell, as pointed out before the square/cube law makes the very basis of the film impossible), but I feel a need to point out several things I noticed that were messed up.

1. Arthropods cannot get that big due to the fact their exoskeleton could not support the weight. There are a land-going crabs that weigh a few pounds, that's about as big as they can get.

2. Several problems with when the girl applied the stun gun to the groin of her boyfriend. First, she would have been shocked as well since he was all over her at the time. Secondly, the boyfriend would have been much more incapacitated from such a long jolt and would not have been walking anytime soon (she shocked him for app. 5 seconds). He would probably have some serious electrical burns as well. Third, he would have urinated while she was shocking him, not afterwards.

3. Several spider types and their behaviors were completely made up. They should have at least used made- up names for their made-up spiders instead of using a well- known and common spider like the orb weaver.

4. A character thinks someone has passed gas when they smell the methane gas in the mines. Methane is odorless, the reason natural gas leaks smell is because the utility company adds a foul smelling substance to the gas to help find leaks.

5. The characters worry about firing guns or lighting lighters in the gas-filled mines, but have no problem with someone driving a vehicle with an internal combustion engine through them.

6. Stun guns are high voltage but very low amperage. There is no way holding it up to the contacts on the generator would have caused the lights in the mine to light up.

7. Ostriches are wary and intelligent animals. They would not have stood around while the other birds were being slaughtered.
