11/01/97: The Whiner Strikes Back...

Using my incredible *but non-Force related- after all, I don't want Lucasfilm to sue me* powers of restraint, I'm going to see if I can leave off from the Cynical Side which I've been dwelling in lately, and give an unbiased review of ESB SE. Hmmmm...hmmm...hmmm. Oh, the Hell with it. Okay, I'll confess: this is my favourite of all the SW films made so far. It didn't rely, like ANH and ROTJ had an unfortunate tendency to do, on psychotic muppets, Yoda excepted. It ended on a downbeat note, rather than the endings of the first and third flicks, which were so cheesy I had to view them while eating crackers. It introduced the ultimate cosmic tough guy, Boba Fett *prior, of course, to his swan dive into the Sarlacc in ROTJ- and yes, I _know_ he first appeared in the wretched SW Hoilday Special, but it didn't do him justice*. And, come on- what do you prefer to see at the climax of a film? The stunning revelation that the hero's father is none other than the symbol of all evil? Or a bunch of teddy bears doing the Hokey Pokey around a campfire? Plus, in ESB, Leia was a little more feminine than she had been in ANH *in which I like her the best, actually, since she was so spiky in the first one*- without resorting to cheap, peep-show, whoopsie-there's-a-nipple playboy-bunny posing such as in ROTJ. The full five Death Stars here- but Luke's whining *Beeeennn...Yoooooddaaa...Dagobaaaaah* still gets on my nerves a little.
