Enchanted

You know that when Disney pokes fun at itself, things will only go so far.

Early during the live-action sequence of "Enchanted", the bewildered real-life Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey), trying to explain his tepid relationship with Nancy (Idina Menzel) utters the following line or thereabouts: "oh, that doesn't apply to Nancy and I."

Such grammar mistakes make my blood boil. As a result, I'm just going to beat on the director, writer, star, and virtually anybody else I can think of on "Enchanted" because a movie that's too stupid to fix this easy-to-fix mistake is too stupid to get reviewed properly. I'm not going to talk about the fairy princess, Giselle (Amy Adams), who gets teleported into real world New York City or the dumb-ass Prince (James Marsden) who follows her. I'm not going to examine the interactions between the na•ve princess and Philip. I'm not going to talk about the relationship between Giselle and Morgan (Rachel Covey), Philip's daughter. I'm not going to examine any of those things because the fact that there wasn't a single person on this film who knew that it's "oh, that doesn't apply to Nancy and me" means that the entire film was made by morons. Morons deserve nothing.

It's "me", "Nancy and me", you fucking losers. Clearly, director Kevin Lima wasn't smart enough to know that or else he would have fixed it. Clearly Bill Kelly, the writer, wasn't smart enough not to write it. Then there's Patrick Dempsey who, if he had a brain in his entire head, would have stepped up and said: "you know, a lawyer would probably know enough to say Nancy and me since it's actually correct." Then there's the matter of every person within twenty feet of Dempsey, from the caterer, to the cinematographer, to the grip, to the god damn set guests. It's hard for me to believe that not one person piped up and mentioned that this sentence was stupid and wrong and, at the very least, made everyone associated with it look like a complete idiot.

This should tell you everything about this film too, since it's Disney's attempt to kind of poke fun at some of their animated clichˇs. You know that when Disney pokes fun at itself, things will only go so far. They're not going to do too much because, well, because their satire is about as good as their grammar. Fuck, didn't somebody take a look at that sentence in a screening and go: "you know, that just isn't right." Nope, guess not. Not one Disney executive figured it out. NOT ONE! For Christ's sake, you can loop that shit right out. Nope, since it's fashionable for people to sound like morons, nobody noticed.

"Enchanted" may enchant some. It enraged me.

Was it really that bad?
