I had heard they had pro medicinal marijuana laws in California, but I didn't know to what extent, and to the extent that they were being abused.
A friend of mine recently returned from San Francisco, California. During his stay he visited a friend who had a medical marjuana card. According to this friend, "everyone's got one." According to the friend, one of these cards can be aquired by going to the doctor and telling them that you have pain. This individual had had hip replacement surgery in the past, as to whether or not he was still experiencing pain I don't know. Apparently he was able to get a card. I would imagine you'd have to have some sort of ailment to get one, I don't know.
Anyway, they visit a medical smoke center. Only the guy with the card can go inside. He comes out with a few ounces (which is quite a lot) of marijuana, 3 different types of hash, and hash oil. The guy has either medicade or medicare, I'm not sure which, but either way, he's not paying full price. He explains that there are many different types of marijuana there, if you don't know which one to get, they'll ask you if you're looking for a 'head high' or a 'body high.'
The card is good for six months, and I think you're allowed to get up to a 2 pounds every two months, I'm a little sketchy on that part. Since it can be bought at a lower price through medical aide, it can be sold on the black market.
I'm pro-legalization of marijuana for recreational and medical use if it can be regulated to a point where a black market is eliminated, and people aren't abusing the system in other ways. You shouldn't be able to just walk into a store, buy it, and then turn around and give it to a minor. It should be highly monitored and one should be highly fined for doing so. If you want it for recreational use you should have to go through some sort of counciling before you get permission to aquire it. And you should have to go to counciling on a certain basis to help get to the bottom of why it is you need to put a substance in your body on a regular basis.
Production of it should be performed and regulated by the government. There are new forms of marjuana such as hydro that are very addicting and some that may be sprayed or enhanced in unnatural ways.
Designated smoking areas and better education towards kids about it is a must as well.
I didn't get the feeling any of this was being done in California. At least it didn't sound like it had been planned out correctly. I'm all for people getting pain relief for those that need it. But if Cali's gonna be the first example of legalized marijuan I would thing they could do better. Again, this is from a heresay discussion mind you. But the way my friend was talking about it, he said once they left the shop, that he really had to let it sink in to his head that what they had just done was legal.
