01/19/00: Reality

It's easy for you to advocate eye for an eye justice now. You're sitting at your keyboard, writing out what you feel is right, and most of you feel pretty comfortable knowing that your opinions aren't going to really affect anyone. They're just your opinions, that's all.

On this subject, my opinions can mean life or death for someone. In court, the judge gets the final say on sentencing, but counsel argues one way or another, swaying the judge's opinion. It's a tremendous undertaking, to take someone's life into your hands. Even if the defendent is the most nefarious sonofabitch ever to set foot in that courtroom, it feels morally repulsive to say that he ought to die. I don't have the right to play God.
