01/19/00: As usual, I am with the Bick

This was a pretty open ended question Ivan, and so you aren't going to get droves of good answers here. To begin with, I think it is fine.

What you are operating on, and what Bickle got right to, is the universal sanctity of human life, a very new and novel concept. In previous centuries, millenia, no one gave a rat's ass about murderers, rapists, etc. You find one, you kill em. Preventative measure against continued action.

Today, it isn't so easy. Governments like to think of themselves as less barbaric, more fair, operating upon a proscribed system of rights. There are those who believe that the death penalty just isn't "fair". Perhaps even a hipocracy.

It is not. The death penalty has different aims than that of a common murderer. It violates the rights of someone who has already gravely and catastrophicaly violated someone's rights.

I say give em the chair.
