"Feminism" has changed from a term meaning practical gender equality to meaning favoring women over men, associated with militant, angry women who resemble K.D. Lang.
Here's one reason why: The founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW) was kicked out of her own organization because she wasn't extreme enough. It's true (and I know that the fact that I can't remember her name weakens my statement, but it is true). So, the organization universally associated with championing feminism has become so extreme that its' original ideals are barely remembered.
Politically, a similar unfortunate change happened inside the Republican party.
Linguistically, a similar unfortunate change has happened to the word "liberal."
