First of all, dude, u need to chill. I respect your opinion (which you are certainly entitled to because we do not live in Equilibrium's demented world) ,but you need to respect the opinions of the other 99% of worldwide critics who think the Matrix is a 'great' movie. It certainly blew my mind.
Second of all, NOBODY is disputing Xian Bale's acting chops. We KNOW he's more talented than Keanu (although I know that some of us keep hoping that he improves, but alas, it aint gonna happen!). American Psycho was the shiznitz (remember that part when they're comparing business cards...priceless!!!).
But the fact is that Equilibrium 'tried' to be like Matrix. Just think about it. Philosophy + Crazy-ass- shooting. You KNOW they hoped this was going to get them Matrix-like box office status.
But it didnt. Why? Certainly not because of a LACK OF GOOD ACTING. There was plenty of it, like i mentioned before. But it was due to lack of coherence (which you may argue that the Matrix lacked as well, but i disagree), lack of originality (come on! you've got to agree with me on this one), and just not enough action (sorry, i am an action freak).
So, in conclusion, Equilibrium was good (and I agree with you that it could have been 'better' with a higher budget = more action) but not good enough for the general herd of movie-going sheeps to chew on. Only us sophisticated wolves (what is up with the animal imagery?) can appreciate such rare gems. While the public has only the matrix, we can boast that we have that too, and Equilibrium as well.
I have no idea what I just said but hopefully you'll understand.
