How can you say that In the Mouth of Madness was original? Only in a talent vaccuum like Hollywood could anything John Carpenter puts out be considered even remotely original. ItMoM was merely a cheap rehash of HP Lovecraft stories. All credit for any creepiness or chills the movie inspired (and I'll admit there were one or two) belongs solely and entirely to HPL. And Escape From LA was trash through and through. Escape from NY was fun parody of post apocolypse films. EFLA by virtue of being a carbon copy of the original is nothing more than evidence in the case against John Carpenter, charged with plagiarization of the worst kind: self plagiarization.
