If Carpenter wanted to make fun of himself, he should have had a graphically inclined buddy make him up a poster. They could have added all the silly visual elements that would've went into the movie, and had goofy captions and thought bubbles and speech balloons all over it for the dialogue. Then he could've had a good laugh and gotten it out of his system. If he'd have sold bootlegged copies of that poster, it would've made him more money and saved him more pride.
