10/30/00: Them's fightin' words

Do you even know what makes a good action scene?

It takes some pretty hefty balls to say that John Woo does not know how to make a good action scene, that all he does is use slow motion too much as people shoot at each other. This is a point of view rarely shown especially considering the popularity of this director at home and abroad. I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who actually agrees with you that he is overrated considering how enjoyable the general public finds his movies.

That said, one would flirt with the idea of you being the sane bastion of reason among this world of allegiance to blood-dripping good vs. evil morality and Christian symbolism if it weren't for the simple carnal appeal the cinematic duels offer and brilliant way in which Woo can capture them in a modern environment using guns instead of swords. Say what you will about the incoherencies of the plot and the scientific basis behind the premise, but when it comes to action scenes this film is just plain breathtaking.

Watch it again, maybe you'll see what I'm talking about. And if that scene where that little picks up a walkman and starts playing "Over the Rainbow" while everything around is full of chaos and bloodshed doesn't cause you to stand up and take notice, I guess Woo just ain't up to your high standards... best you view a movie with less discriminating tastes.
