07/06/04: I'm just a little surprised he didn't go for Senator Evan Bayh

I'm not a fan of ole' Evan, but the upsides for Kerry would have been considerable:

A two-term governor with bipartisan support, and a rising star in the Senate.

Young (43, I think) , ambitious, and well-spoken.

A relatively conservative Dem with strong ties to the DLC centrists.

Huge name recognition with party loyalists (his pop was the legendary Birch Bayh)

My guess is Bayh is sitting this one out because he's prepping himself for his own run in 2008.
