11/29/1998: Excellent rant.

You should do them more often; I had forgotten about several films you mentioned, including THE CULPEPPER CATTLE CO. and THE COWBOYS. Bruce Dern was in the latter one I believe, playing the jackass that he often did so well. Anyone remember the title of the John Wayne comedy/western that also starred the gorgeous redhead Maureen O'Hara?

Just so happens that I recently caught THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST on the tube...not only sexist but racist, too! Wonder whatever happened to the actress (another gorgeous redhead) who starred with Don Knotts in that movie - a Barbara somebody. On a related note, I know I've seen two of Don Knott's movies..THE RELUCTANT ASTRONAUT and THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN, but didn't he do several others?

Can't recall the Raquel Welsh flick you asked about, but I do remember seeing her in some cheesy caveman movie awhile back, scantilly-clad in fur with tons of make-up and false eyelashes. Classic Velveeta. On Candice Bergen, she was in a western made in the early 70's I believe called SOLDIER BLUE. It also starred the actor who co-starred with Nick Nolte in RICH MAN POOR MAN, but I can't remember his name either. Apologies, my memory hasn't been worth a shit for the last two days.

I'm a little surprised that you didn't like the TRINITY movies...to me they kind of represent the dumb and dumber of that era. And yes, Terence Hill's character was definitely more cheerful and playful. The western they put out two or three years ago was some disappointing crap.

I agree with you about ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST - very depressing, and Henry Fonda as the ultra-cruel leader of outlaws was just plain wierd. Have been meaning to rent a Charles Bronson western for months now, so I think I'll do just that in the next few days. I always thought his voice was so cool.

I liked Jimmy Stewart (and Doug McClure) in SHENANDOAH, and BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID is of course excellent, too. Hard to believe, but I've never seen the LONESOME DOVE series, but not as hard to believe that you've never seen BLAZING SADDLES!

Speaking of character actors, and he wasn't as well-known as Ben Johnson, but does anyone remember the name of the guy who was also in a lot of westerns with the scruffy beard and very strange-looking eyes? I think his first name was Jack, and I believe he was in ONCE UPON A TIME, too.

Ever see THE MAN WHO LOVED CAT DANCING with Burt Reynolds and Sarah Miles?
