Yes, an unfortunate physical malady that's been blown out of proportion by mythology, much like porphyria.
I even found a photo in a medical journal while researching an equally bizarre but unrelated topic for a novel.
I agree, "big hairy monster" isn't the most eloquent of terms, but it's marginally better than the current Australian vernacular, "gutted hedgehog". Curiously enough, I've never heard anyone mention this term with a woman in the room.
