I was talking with a Vietnam vet here at work. Nice guy. He says he came to the country never intending to hurt anyone, until he say his friend's brains get blown out. He killed his first vietcong at 17. He says you just aren't in control in situations like what those Haditha marines were in. It is simply unreasonable to expect civil behavior in life-and-death stressful situations.
If the results of war strike us as distasteful, perhaps the entire enterprise was a fool's quest to begin with.
If anyone need be hanged, let it be the fool who lead the soldiers into this unfortunate plight.
