Many critics attacked 'Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas' unfairly IMO. Their main argument was that the film was 'pointless' and 'incoherent'. The movie was supposed to be this way. A film about substance abuse is certainly not going to be coherent or logical. Terry Gilliam was trying to 'offer' his audience a perspective from inside the warped minds of Duke and Dr.Gonzo. The flashy camera angles, campy music, deliberate OTT performances, off beat humour and use of different colour schemes was Gilliam's way of showing us how depraved these individuals are.
Another positive aspect of this film was how the main character Duke was commenting on the social/political change of the early 70's. This movie does NOT advocate the use of illicit drugs and the conclusion further emphasises this point. The Duke suggests that the whole 'LSD movement' was counter-productive and served no real purpose other then pure escapism.
An extremely underrated film that's highly recommended.
