This is the quote at the beginning of the film: "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." This movie is based on this quote. It seems Duke and Gonzo accomplished exactly this. They made beasts of themselves, and everything seemed to turn out okay, as we can see from the last shot of the movie with Duke driving away just smiling and laughing after all the shenanegans in Las Vegas. Also, this movie is largely a comedy, so don't take it TOO seriously. And I'm just a 19 year-old guy who's never used drugs in his entire life, not even alcohol, and probably never will, and I really enjoyed this movie. After finishing it and rewinding it to the beginning and then pressing play just to read the opening quote, I found myself wanting to watch it again! It's just funny and interesting and crazy and fast-paced. Shame on those who think this is a terrible movie. At the very least, it's something not everyone could like, but it certainly isn't a bad film. Just my 2 cents.
