1. Fight Club: brutal, hilarious, frantic, cynical, visually stunning tour de force of alienation, discontent, and ennui. Super Duper Kool. 5 stars
2.(tie) Three Kings: provacative and funny action/comedy that was both light-hearted and gripping. The best cinematoraphy I've seen in a dog's age. 4 1/2 stars
2.(tie) Being John Malkovich: the most inventive film I've seen in a looooong time. Filled with the type of visuals and concepts that make you glad to be a film buff. The pacing was a bit slow, but you can't hate a movie where Charlie Sheen has the best jokes. 4 1/2 stars
4. The Limey: Terence Stamp OWNS his part as a Cockney ex-con who's tough-as-nails, deeply-haunted and funny; Richard Stark's Parker plus a heart. Soderbergh's experimentation with chronology and use of a hand-held camera made it all the more immediate and resonant. 4 stars
5. Dogma: funny, complex and soulful. A mix of good and so-so performances, crummy technical skills, and dialogue that is alternately great and tedious. It is, however, a Kevin Smith movie, and that tubby bitch has grown on me like a barnacle. 3 1/2 stars
6. American Beauty: some fantastic performances (Spacey is God) and some moments of great poignance and humor, but in the end, like Eyes Wide Shut, it was a shrugger. 3 stars
7. Bringing Out the Dead: has some of Scorsese's most arresting visuals (the scene on the balcony stands out) and is chock full of the kind of realism and texture that Scorsese is a master of. The fatal flaw, however, is the films relentlessly draggy pace that blunts alot of the impact. 3 stars
8. House on Haunted Hill: boffo premise and vivid atmosphere delivered with stunning idiocy. 2 stars
