11/08/02: it's possible to appreciate a good performance

and still not really enjoy the movie.

I thought Sean Penn was brilliant in "Carlito's Way" - and I found the film relentlessly dull. And predictable.

It was, however, the first time I'd seen Jpohn Leguizamo, so it wasn't a total waste.
