10/02/02: How can anyone knock a film...

That has successfully incorporated an opera with an action scene. This film is awesome!

Watch this scene closely, I have my own theory about it (you can find out what below). Here are some main points to look out for:

It sounds like the Diva sings "It called on me" (to hide the stones because they trusted her). The whole song is in latin but this has been put into the film by the writer because of this fact.

Later when she is singing, she sounds sad because she knows she is going to die. You can tell she knows this because at the end of the slow singing she points at Corben Dallas and is singing to him. I believe she is trying to convey that even though the creatures think they have found the stones (see below), it is Dallas that will eventually get them. She knows that Dallas will get the stones, therefore she knows she is going to die. She also sounds like she sings "Innocent", which gives the idea that she is explaining why an innocent (herself) must die.

She then knows what she is singing about (her death) is happening because her bodyguards get shot and she holds her stomach and then holds her hands out as if to show blood. The actual Latin song has nothing to warrant her holding her hands out in it.

Next, it sounds like she says "I've found it" just before the alien finds the box he thinks contains the stones. She does not say I've found it, and is instead singing in Latin still. But she knows they have found the box.

Next is the best bit, her voice and dancing parallel LeeLoo's actions:

She starts to sing with the same tone, where LeeLoo is fighting the aliens.

She then hits a high pitch when LeeLoo kicks the alien in the face as he is holding her arms.

The next noticeable part is when LeeLoo kicks the sword and it smashes into three pieces. The opera singer's voice changes in this part into three short high pitched bursts.

Next, LeeLoo is flipping forwards and we see the Diva dancing in a similar fashion.

Next, LeeLoo stops and holds her arms out towards the alien. The Diva is shown to be almost smiling. I believe this conveys a feeling of success where LeeLoo has managed to do these forward flips and avoid the bullets.

Next, the alien tries to shoot LeeLoo and finds he has ran out of bullets. The Diva then sings as if laughing and therefore mocking the alien, which is exactly what LeeLoo does with her hand gesture at the same time.

Next, the Diva goes from a low pitch to a high one as the alien is running towards LeeLoo. LeeLoo then punches the alien with such force that he goes flying.

Next another similar scene where she is slapping the alien and the Diva is almost laughing, but not quite.

Lastly, the Diva and LeeLoo end the piece with a bow.

Guessed what I think yet? I believe the Diva and LeeLoo are connected because the Diva has the stones inside of her. The Diva gives power to LeeLoo through her singing, such as the backflips when she is dancing and the high pitched singing when LeeLoo kicks the alien in the head when he has her pinned.

I personally salute a writer that can think of something like this. It is truly genius and is the main reason why I love The Fifth Element so much.
