The science fiction genre seems to be at a crossroads, the interests of movie goers is shifting from space opera to fantasy films.
SF in the next few years will not be dominated the the Star trek and Star Wars franchises. Nemesis was not the money maker Paramount wanted and Star Wars has one more film left, in a prequel series that in many ways has left loyal fans less than thrilled.
Fact is Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future was the product of a different era in America. It was an age od optimism. As the years go Gene's view of the utopian Earth of Star trek seems less relevant.
As for films expect more harry Potter, maybe ventures attached to the works of Tolkien.
As for space opera, this is now the opportunity for new Franchises and Icons to emerge on TV and film.
