The guys with guns never got a chance to use them because they were too busy running back to the plane when the Spinosaurus showed up. The creature ripped apart the plane and, presumably, the heavy duty firepower was lost in the action. They had enough on them to blow up a small aircraft, though, as shown in one of the movie's first scenes.
And I should point out that in "Lost World," a bunch of hunters were sent in to capture the dinosaurs for the San Diego dino zoo. They were armed with guns a plenty, though they used mostly tranquilizers.
