12/26/00: What you SHOULD have asked for this Christmas

Posted By: convenor

Now that the feasting is done, a couple of AFI film capsules, with typos courtesy of yours truly:

TOY STORY (1995): Studio, Disney; Running time, 80m; Director, John Lasseter; Producers, Ralph J. Guggenhein, Bonnie Arnold; Screenwriters, John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Peter Docter, Joe Ranft, Joss Whedon, Joel Cohen, Alec Sokolow

Ths first fully computer-generated feature film creates the world of Woody, a toy cowboy voiced by Tom Hanks, who is usurped as a young boy's favorite toy by the higher-tech but doltish Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen. You'll hear terrific, funny dialogue, and the fabulous animation will have you disbelieving your eyes.

FYI: Insider notes: The carpet pattern in the hallway of Andy's house is the same as the carpet pattern in Stanley Kubirck's "The Shining." In the scene in which Buzz is knocked out the window, the theme to Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is heard in a minor key. When Woody is holding the staff meeting, there are several books visible behind him that refer to two previous Pixar films: "Red's Dream" and "Knickknacks."

ALSO RECOMMENDED: A Bug's Life

PINOCCHIO (1940): Studio, Disney; Running time, 87m; Directors, Ben Sharpsteen, Hamilton Luske; Producer, Walt Disney; Screenwriters, Ted Sears, Webb Smith, Joseph Sabo, Otto Englander, William Cottrell, Erdman Penner, Aurelius Battaglia

Puppeteer Geppetto's fantasy of having a real-life son comes true with help provided by Jiminy Cricket, but not until Pinocchio has many adventures. The song "When You Wish Upon a Star" has become a signature Disney tune. This is an extraordinary animated film concluding with an amazing, terrifying sequence involving a giant whale.

FYI: The character Gideon, who is mute in the film, was originally conceived as a chatterbox who couldn't stop talking, and cartoon voice expert Mel Blanc was hired to record his dialogue. After Gideon's character was changed, all that remained of Blanc's work in the finished film was two hiccups.

ALSO RECOMMENDED: Dumbo.
