12/27/00: Well, a little late, but my initial thoughts on the "Dune" mini-series..

Posted By: Drew_Atreides

...my sister somehow managed to get her hands on a copy of the mini-series that aired recently on the sci-fi channel, and i just finished watching the first part of it..

Here are my impressions:

The Good- The Special FX (obviously).. I especially loved the space-folding sequence and the depiction of the Guild Navigator.. BOTH were almost spot-on representations of how i had imagined them to look back when i first read the original novel..

The Ornithopter Design- Terrific.. It actually LOOKS like a bug...

Gurney Halleck: As much as i liked
Patrick Stewart, the actor in the mini-series is closer to how i pictured Gurney then our dear Captain Picard ever was...

Baron Harkonnen- Much more sinister in this one then the whacked out, puss-faced dude from Lynch's film...

The Streets of Arakeen- You actually get glimpses as to what everyday life on Arrakis is like, here, something that is mentioned QUITE often in the books... I have to say that, again, the Director's vision was spot-on..

The Bad- Paul Atreides- MAN did they completely screw up here... Where the hell did this 'whiny, angry, moody' Paul come from? That's not PAUL!! How can you root for a whiny, spoiled little brat like him? Paul was a son whom his father was PROUD of...How could a man like Leto POSSIBLY be proud of this little dink?

Irulan-Paul romantic tension- I REALLY don't like this... Paul loved Chani.. He NEVER had feelings for Irulan.. Their marriage ends up being for convinience ALONE...I do not like that they're trying to imply that there was ever ANYTHING between Irulan and Paul... (I've heard that the reason they're taking this route is because they're setting up for the events that occur in "Dune Messiah" (Won't spoil those, here))... I STILL don't agree with this, though, as it tarnishes Paul's character even more...

Handling of the revelation of who the Atreides' Traitor was- Did you even SEE Dr Yueh before his betrayal?? All i can remember is, during the scene where Paul and the Duke are going over possible suspects, Leto suggets Yueh, and Paul mentions that his Suk coniditioning would prevent his ever turning against them... NOTHING more from Yueh until the betrayal... One of the CLIMATIC moments of the story was completely ruined...

The Futuristic-feel- For me, the bits on Caladan are just TOOO high-tech/science-fictiony... Lynch's film was much closer, in respects to atmosphere and 'look'...

Overall, it IS a fairly enjoyable series, so far.. I'm looking forward to watching the next 2 installments.. Hopefully, Paul's character will evolve into someone who's more likeable!
