Well, he did shoot the bear like 5-6 times before the bear finally buckled. And it looked like the guy knew his way around the gun, so I'm guessing that he shot the bear in the 'right places.'
By far the thing that is still the most interesting to me is how the doctor ended up pretty far away from all of the other survivors when he woke up at the start of the 1st episode. Where he was sitting, there was no reason for him to not be on the beach with the others.
