I do not think that the ending was indicative of the fact that they were meant to be together. The grasping of memories was an attempt to regain something that was being taken away. Without those memories Joel and Clementine lack the lessons and values they learned through thier turmultous relationship. Therefore, they get back together because they did not learn from thier past errors and are therefore doomed. It will take them another few years to realize that they were not meant to be together.
