In fact, it's not a racing game at all. As Penny-Arcade pointed out Criterion has managed to create an action game based around cars, but it's not more of a racing game than twisted metal.
I like Burnout 3 because at heart I love two things more than anything else, cars and explosions and this game has both in spades.
