09/26/96: Women HAVE Voices -

Posted By: Bonnie

Some of us just need to find them. Let's face it - most people go to the movie theater to be entertained and to escape their own reality for a couple of hours. They may even get to fantasize that they are the people on the screen. Hence - they get to express (if only in active fantasy) themselves in ways they wouldn't dare to in real life. A lot of women have a lot of anger - yet were conditioned to believe that expressing anger is unacceptable (and certainly not "feminine"). So it's simple - the First Wives Club is a revenge fantasy. An easy way to identify with expressing anger without having to deal with the fear and ramifications of actually expressing it. I agree with you - ideally movies about women should portray women as being what I like to call "fully feminine" - ie. strong, gentle, angry, loving, mystical, nurturing, sensual, intelligent, curious, protective, hopeful, capable, beautiful (without regard to bodytype or exterior attributes), vulnerable and proud to be female. But they generally don't - and perhaps they won't until we make it okay and safe for women and men to express themselves fully as human beings. The sad thing is - men have the exact same problem women do. Society says its not acceptable for men to express parts of themselves that don't look "masculine". Yet, we are all people, and we are complicated and multi-faceted - and we all have feminine and masculine attributes. Acceptance of each other would be a good place to start.
