10/04/96: Re: Sending a message with money

Someone told me recently that film industry studies indicate that most people in the US have no idea what they're going to see when they go to the movies. They pick the nearest multiplex, drive there, and stand looking at the list of films until one (perhaps the most heavily advertised?) pops out at them.

This method explains two things: the proliferation of multiplex cinemas (and the corresponding decline of single-theater cinemas, at least where I live), and the amount of drivel being released. It also indicates a level of faith in the movie industry that I do not feel.

When I look at a movie to decide whether I want to see it, the first question I ask myself is, "Do I want to spend $7.50 on this?" At least 75%, the answer is no, and I either wait until it's at a discount movie house or released on video, or I give it a miss entirely. I'm not willing to spend my hard-earned cash on cheap clothes or bad food, so why shell it out for awful movies? There's plenty of crap on TV for free!

(And, BTW, to Lola--and Superman, too?--most of the movies that I do end up seeing run at either Kendall or the Nickelodeon.)
