Although, "Departed" is a huge hit and might very well win Best Picture. The rest of the nominees in most categories will leave the average moviegoer scratching his head -- and I had that feeling months ago, before I even realized that December didn't have anything significant to offer in even limited release.
That said, I still haven't seen "Volver," "Last King of Scotland" or "Little Children" (all unreleased and unscreened here so far), but I've seen almost all of the other major nominees on the GS list (which I suspect will be somewhat representative of the Academy's choices -- although I don't think "Apocolypto" qualifies for a foreign language Oscar since it's an American film that was made in Mexico). Should be interesting (or not so much).
