01/15/07: Freedom Writers

I haven't seen the movie, but have read the book and news articles and have heard Erin speak at events. I'm worried at some of the reviews I've read, including this one here... I am really hoping the movie doesn't do a huge disservice to the students and teacher who did amazing things in '94.

Mr. Cranky's review says "Everyone gets it in "Freedom Writers." Every student learns. Every student achieves. Every student is a changed person by the end of the film and Erin might as well be Mother Theresa." Yeah, a ridiculous notion, huh? But jeez, but it was a pretty amazing thing: (and I hope people read the book Freedom Writers Diary) 100% of her students graduated from high school, most went to college. Given the circumstances, this is miraculous. All worked incredibly hard, due, not to Erin being "young and white and proud" but because of her respect for the kids and desire to help them.

That's a good thing. Yeah, I'm talking about good things here. It's good to talk about good things. Because good things do happen. Yeah, there's a lot of shit, all around. There's also people who truly do work hard, just because they feel like it. Just because it's what we actually want, to give a damn about each other, to learn about each other. Erin Gruwell and the Freedom Writers worked their asses off and that''s to be honored, no matter what the film is like. I'm almost afraid to see it.
