Akane: Hello? Yes. In a decision announced by the commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez will be required to leave Miami and be returned to his father in Cuba by January 14th.
[cuts to video]
"Family reunification has long been a cornerstone of both American immigration law and U.S. practice," the INS commissioner said. "This little boy, who has been through so much, belongs with his father."
[cuts back to Akane]
Akane: In response to the INS decision, President Clinton said that he felt the INS made the right decision.

"I told you when we started this that I would do my best to keep this decision out of politics. We have done that," said Clinton.

Akane: Armando Gutierrez, a spokesman for Elian's Miami relatives, said the family was shocked. "No one is listening to the mother's cry for Elian." When asked what the boy has been saying, Gutierrez said, "He cares for his father but he would like his father to be here with him." He said Elian would be taken to a "safe house to keep him away from all this." This is Akane Karasuma, in Miami.
