I've been on the side of the angels all through this thread!

Okay, seriously. I guess I'm seeing this through my brother's eyes. Back in April, his ex left the state with their daughter and got married to the guy she was fooling around with while married to my brother. She did this without notice to my brother as required by the divorce decree, and when his visitation weekend came around, he just couldn't find his daughter, contact any authority who gave a rat's ass, and basically got pretty frantic. She proceeded to jerk him around for the better part of six months, during which time my brother continued to pay support, walked through the system's red tape, got to hearing, and didn't see his daughter.

Watching him go batshit for all that time (he has lived with me since his divorce) close up gave me a greater appreciation for fathers and their role in their children's lives. Finally seeing his daughter after seven months (my brother and his ex have since established a visitation schedule), and knowing that he's lost time with his daughter that he can never regain, kind of pissed me off.

Elian's father has apparently regularly exercised visitation, has maintained an ongoing relationship with him, and is the most appropriate person to take care of him now that his mother is dead. And since the dad cannot go to the kid (for obvious reasons we all know), I think it's a no-brainer that the kid should go to the dad.

It's a disgrace that the kid became a political football.
