Sure, Star Trek is an easy target, but Galaxy Quest is a cunning skewer of the Trekkie subculture, with a story that cleverly blurs the line between "real life" and the Galaxy Quest mythos. The "imposters mistaken for the real thing who rise to the occasion" plot isn't very new, sure, but it's about time someone did it to Kirk and the gang, surely the ultimate extension of the theme, considering the colossal power and responsibility of commanding a starship and duking it out with ruthless aliens for the fate of an entire race. (Nobody's ready for that kind of responsibility, so why not a bunch of ribbon-cutting has- been actors? At least they were run through the simulator a hundred times.)
Plenty of entertainment value here, lots of yuks that aren't too mean, and Tim Allen's ego was supposed to spray all over the place; he's channeling Shatner, right? (Actually, I wonder if William Shatner's ego was all that out of control later on, at least, since his behind the scenes books about Star Trek, especially Star Trek Movie Memories, go the extra mile to play up the virtues of his associates.)
