Considering the pop culture explosion of even a mild interesting science fiction movie or tv show, it comes as no surprise that someone could take the idea of "Trekkies" and add something to it. As I write this review, I remember the story of how some children were taken into protective custody from their parents because they could not speak English; they spoke Klingon.
Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Allen Rickman, and a few others are stars of a former top rated science fiction show call Galaxy Quest. Now cancelled, they live day by day making public appearances at science convictions and signing autographs. Along come a few fans who ask Allen to go with them onto their starship and make a negotiating deal for them. Thinking it's another public appearance, Allen agrees. Allen goes onto the ship, orders a number of missles fired upon the enemy, then leaves. Then he realizes the starship was real, that what he thought were fans are real aliens, and that he just screwed up a negotiating deal between two galactic nations. The aliens show up again, this time for negotiating deal number two. Allen agrees, this time taking his entire crew from the tv show, since the aliens have designed and built everything based on the Galaxy Quest tv show.
Was this a pretty fair movie for being so predictable. We know what the final outcome is going to be. We know what is going to happen. We know that sooner or later everything is going to turn out okay. So what. This movie will appeal to everyone whose ever watched Babylon 5 and wondered how they could get one of their cool telecommunicator units.
p.c.
