Here's what I reckon.
There's obviously far too many coincidences in this movie for some people to think of it as a "serious" game. The ending HAD to be the way it was, because when it all came down to it, it WAS all a game. The 'first' ending, with shooting Conrad and jumping off the buliding was tremendous I agree, but the subsequent party bit was very important.
The entire film was about manipulation. Van Orton was manipulated at every turn, as was the audience. We never knew who to trust or what to believe and scoffed at unbelievable events. The ending was the final confirmation of all of that - Van Orton needed a decent birthday present, and we needed the same release. After all, weren't we manipulated at every turn during "Seven"?
Or, as one of my friends suggested to me,
a) The film is about movie making: the incredible co-incidences, the false identities and false sets, the characters we can never quite believe, the happy ending, yada yada yada...
and
b) in the end, CRS is just another elitist club for the rich.
(But that still doesn't excuse van orton for NOT kicking his brother around the room...)
So for all this, I thought the movie was damn brilliant.
Please be gentle on me if you're going to flame me...this is my first Mr Cranky post!!
