I think Richard Linklater is trying to figure something new out too, something that melds the 'painterly' with the real. Cine verite has definitely had it's day - nobody believes anyting they see anymore.
SFX/CGI are not the way to go. Something has to change in the very texture of film itself....
Animation is going to undergo some major changes, with more content aimed at adults. Most of the graphic/atistic talent is sucked up by computer games. The medium is ok for your average pizza-face BEBO, but grown-ups want a hell of a lot more brain-engagement.
I think he's wrong in thinking narrative is dead - it's long overdue a resurrection, but matched by serious artistic invention - something between the real and the fake.
It'll be interesting to see what will happen...
