12/29/02: This movie is trying to say something profound....

But it just winds up being profoundly stupid.

The book it is based on has been blasted by historians ever since it was written for being a complete fabrication. There are countless historical inaccuracies in the film. Bodies being delivered to New York from the Civil War (they were nearly always buried on the battlefield, embalming was not advanced enough). Soldiers wearing pre Civil War uniforms with bedrolls. Troops being shipped by boat from New York to Tennessee (????).

Daniel Day-Lewis seems to be doing a VERY bad imitation of Robert Dinero. Neither Decaprio or Diaz can act or are suitable for their roles. Character motivation and plot are practicly nonexistent. The draft riots are tacked on to the end.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD movie. Avoid it like the plague. It reminds me of the collosal flop Heaven's Gate which used similarly made-up events to try to make some sort of nihilistic statement about America.
