12/28/02: The Draft Riots were pivotal.

It was really the only place the movie could have ended, both thematically and dramatically. I don't know what the hell is anti-climatic about a friggin' gunship blowing the hell out of the Five Points and half the population getting shredded by minie balls, but the coitus interruptus of the gang fight was necessary, I think, to put those events in their proper perspective. Also, I liked how Bill and Amsterdam's relationship ended; bloody, but intimate, which was much truer to the dynamics of the two than a run-of-the- mill mano-e-mano showdown would have been.
