I read it on the web about a year ago when a search on "Chuck Palahniuk" turned up about 4 hits. Now google has 13 pages of hits on him. Good luck.
It makes perfect sense that it was an afterthought to make the Brad Pitt character an alter-ego because the story works just as well without it. He just decided to give it more density when he was almost finished.
