at least, according to the several Civil War books I've read:
'Invading' northerners were FAR more inhumane in their treatment of southern civilians than were their rebel counterparts.
Yeah, I know - the South only 'invaded' the north once - during the month or so surrounding Battle of Gettysburg.
anyways, all accounts I've read had R. E. Lee insisting that his troops lay off mistreating northern civilians, being the gentleman from Virgina that he was.
'Course, the southerners did get a measure of revenge on any northerner unfortunate enough to be taken as a POW. Then again, northern POW camps weren't Shangri-La either.
bottom line (of this post, anyways) is that the treatment of northern civilians by rebel soldiers - in general - was FAR more civil (pun) than that of Sherman's troops.
Fuck Sherman.
