I once read that Sherman saved the plantation of some Southern chick he had a crush on from back at West Point. (Her brother was at West Point). Supposedly back then, this chick, whose name escapes me, said that she pitied anyone who was Sherman's foe. Sherman (supposedly) replied that even if she was his foe, he'd protect her.
The story goes that Sherman came across her plantation on his march to the sea, they had left an elderly slave to watch over it while everyone else left. So Sherman, upon finding out who's plantation it was, posted Union guards to insure that the property wouldn't be fucked with. When the Union army had passed through, Sherman left a note with the guy to give to this chick. The note said something about how he told her that even if she was his enemy that he'd protect her anyway.
My personal opinion on Sherman's "March to the Sea" is that the South shouldn't have seceded. If they wouldn't have tried to split the country, then Sherman wouldn't have had to fuck up their countryside.
Now, changing wars real quick, the one thing I cannot abide in a war discussion, is hearing anyone's moronic opinions on why we SHOULDN'T have dropped the two big ones on Japan. I don't even have the patience to go into my argument, because anyone in the dissenting opinion is just too pathetically misinformed to even fucking bother with.
