03/22/01: Longstreet was mistreated.

He made those infamous remarks about Southerners being a "conquered people" which were totally misconstrued. Longstreet was arguing against armed resistance to Reconstruction politics,(which was consider a DISTINCT possibility in New Orleans, where he first lived after the war) and claiming that if the South wasn't as hostile, they wouldn't suffer as much -- he was RIGHT about that, but nobody listened and they called him a traitor. So he became a Republican, which made it worse.

For the record, he was born in South Carolina. Gordon, it turns out, was from Georgia. Still, as a military officer, I'd have taken either Gordon or Longstreet over Jackson.

I guess though if your options for honoring are Jackson or A.P. Hill, that's an easy choice.
