06/12/97: The Rest

but Jim's got good points. These are NOT niggly little details that you have to fight to notice: these are the everyday little ripoffs that filmmakers pull on us because they don't give a shit about what makes an interesting and original story, or what makes original storyTELLING, if the story itself is sound. I mean, this shit is everywhere. Cases in point:

A) The janitor whistling as he works in the boiler room where the big monster lurks . . . and suddenly he gets this real creepy feeling, and turns around . . . only to see nothing. Until he turns back around to work, that is, which is when he looks surprised and gets creamed.

B) The guy you see least of all in the murder mystery flick, who is ALWAYS the killer.

Or how about C) The widescreen, no-soundtrack shots of a building from the outside, filmed dead on for more than a second -- don't'cha just know that building's blowing up?

These are SERIOUS infractions, man. Don't make light of them. It's as bad as saying, "Hey, we know we already made Die Hard . . . but now we're putting a green lens filter on the camera, using the same script, and it's Die Hard II! It's different enough . . . ."
