There's a world of difference between Princess Diana/JFK jnr. and this Aaliyah person. Surely there's far more significance to be placed on the passing of the former than on the latter.
I had to re-read your post too - I was sure (hoping?) you'd said, "Sometimes I think the celebrities uses tragedies such as celeb deaths simply to hype themselves..." :)
