08/29/01: Diana, Fame, and Music

Diana also used her celebrity to bring attention to causes nobody really ahd much interest in. Keep in mind, she was one of the first (if not The First) public figure to make physical contact with an AIDS patient. Remember, at taht time, people still didn't fully understand the disease, and everyone was paranoid. I was one of the people who thought AIDS patients should be sent off to live with other AIDS patients and keep away from all the healthy people. Well, after seeing Diana do that, I did some research. I see I was wrong back then. Actually, so many of us were.

Her work with landmines is to be commended as well. Yes, her death did upstage that of Mother Theresa's which is unfortunate... and, that probably is due to the fact Diana had beautiful gowns and jewelry... she also died young. Mother Theresa was old. She had pretty much accomplished everything she had to accomplish. Diana was NOT finished and was still growing. As she grew, she seemed to be developing more and more of an appreciation for her fame and realizing how much she could use it to further any cause.

The thing I find truly amazing with Diana is that yes, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth but still was able to feel for the poor and less fortunate. Mother Theresa, on the other hand, was poor... so, of course, she could identify with the less fortunate. And, from my personal experience, the poor are generally more charitable than the wealthy.

For Allyiah's fans, her death is perhaps just as tragic as Diana's... if not more so. I am not familiar with her music at all but music touches the soul. It reaches people. One listens to a singer and worships that singer when the song touches something in them. There are some singers who've performed songs where I feel I can identify with that singer because the lyrics of their song describe something I went through... know what I mean?

Reminds me of a story I once heard. Yeras ago, Penny Marshall was shopping with Paul Simon (not exactly my favorite singer/song writer). Everyone was stopping Penny Marshall on the street saying how much they enjoyed "Laverne and Shirley". Only two people pulled Paul Simon aside to say how much they loved his music and IDENTIFIED with it. Penny Marshall said in an interview or something that she was very jealous becaus eventhough fewer people had recognized him on the street, Paul Simon had touched really touched their hearts in a deeper manner. That's when she decided she wanted to direct.
