08/28/01: Detachment and Celebrity Mourning

I have heard it said that Americans are no longer close to their family and friends. They feel no real intimacy with those around them. (On average, of course.)

As a result, more and more people, starved for a human connection, develop emotional bonds with people they don't know. These people, of course, are celebrities.

This was what resulted in the outpouring of grief (and newsprint) over the death of JFK Jr., whose greatest accomplishment in life was -nothing-. And that's what attached people to Di - she was the living Barbie doll. Someone with a better life than they had. She was famous solely for being famous.
