08/21/97: Why not a movie about Medger Evers?

Posted By: verytired

Why spend millions of dollars just so that Rob Reiner and Alec Baldwin can pat themselves on the back for being Nice White People and so that James Wood can collect an Oscar nomination for wearing old-man makeup and going through every well-off northerner's cliches about "white trash" southerners? This SHOULD have been a movie about Medger Evers and his wife and their heroic struggle for racial justice before his death and her struggle for the legal variety after his death. It's nice to know that the state of Mississippi finally did it's duty regarding Byron de la Beckwith, but would they have done it if Myrlie Evers hadn't kept kicking them in their collective butt? And does getting sick of the butt-kicking and finally doing your duty make you a hero . . .?
