is called "An American Rhapsody", and it's pretty good. Basically, it's the story of an immigrant family and how their teenage daughter comes to terms with the choices her parents made. Yes, it's a "coming to terms" movie, but until near the end not really manipulative. It sounds kind of Lifetimey but is more intelligent and respectful than that.
Scarlett's billed as the star but doesn't show up for quite a while. That's when the movie starts to go south. Her interactions with her mom just felt too much like "acting". They didn't seem natural. I like Scarlett and would want her as a friend, but although she was good in "Ghost world" I'm beginning to think she's not much of an actress. She definitely got this part wrong.
On the other hand, for half of the movie her character is played by a six-year-old who is incredible. No joke. Working in 2 languages, too. It probably helps that the character was supposed to have a blank look on her face much of the time, but still, a performance by a six-year- old that is remotely good is a miracle. I spent the last 2 years teaching six year olds. I should know. Many of them can't even walk down the hallway without tripping. And those that can are using their superior coordination to thwack their classmates on the nose.
For the record, I'd give the movie a 6 out of 10. i liked how the movie made a parallel between the iron curtain and an overprotective mother. i wish it made more observations like that, but it's a good story generally well acted and worth checking out
